- AIDS FIGURES IN THE MATJHABENG REGION OF THE FREE STATE ALONE:
6 million
people are infected with the HIV/Aids in Matjhabeng Region of the
Free State.
The high incidence can be attributed to the hundreds of migrant
workers who have lost their jobs due to the closure and down scaling
of the gold mines in the region and who have insufficient which
have left thousands of mineworkers without jobs, far from home with
many families.
The townships in Welkom area
(Thabong, Kutlwanong) are in the worst state ever - no sanitation,
no running water and living in old mining hostels (2-4 families
at a time) or worse, near rubbish dumps.
Approximately
70 burials take place at just one of the several cemetries in the
Matjhabeng Region of the Free State each week. Of these, at least
20 are for little children.
6 million children
are infected with HIV/Aids in the Welkom region alone. Undertaking
businesses are doing a roaring trade and even vying for the corpses
at the hospitals.
The Matjhabeng Region of the FREE STATE Province had the highest
incidence of HIV/AIDS in pregnant women in South Africa in 2002.
41% of them were tested HIV positive.
Ms Tsopo (MEC
of Health - Free State) has said that population-wise,the Free State
ranks 8th out of the 9 provinces, but has the 3rd highest HIV/AIDS
statistics in South Africa. |

Star Quotes...
- I like
to thank God with this two children because I saw the grace of Him and
His power to these children. I didn’t thought by this time this
children will be alive.
Now Goitsemang is walking like other children. It’s an amazing grace.
I still have hope that one day Rorisang can walk like Goitsemang and other
children. Goitsemang is a good example of ‘Tshepo ya Bophelo’
– ‘Hope of Life’ that a child who have a virus of HIV
can do everything like other children if a parent can give him care, support
and networking to accept his child.” -
Care Worker, Morning Star, Welkom
"The
sea is a nice place. I want to see it again one day." - one of the
children, Morning Star trip to Durban, 2007
"I
didn’t believe that I would ever be able to go to Durban to see
the sea. I thank Morning Star for helping me to go there." - one
of the children, Morning Star trip to Durban, 2007
